Meningococcal essays Meningococcal disease, a form of meningitis, is becoming more common and widespread and just as deadly around the world everyday. There are numerous different types of Meningococcal disease, which include A, B, C, Y and W135. A and B are the cases mainly found throughout the world, Type A mainly being in Africa and type B throughout the New Zealand, USA and England. They have cures for Type A, C, Y, and W135, but the one that is most deadly and devastating, Type B, has yet to find a cure of any sort. Type B used to just be mainly found in newly born babies, since their immune system isnt as strong to viruses. But it has more than doubled its amount of infections in teens and adults aging from 15-24 going from 300 cases to 600 cases found in the US. They think its becoming more common in college students because of their late night partying and drinking. Type B has become so deadly that in England they have a response team devoted to Meningococcal disease cases. Meningococcal acts very quickly and spreads 100 to 1000 times faster than a normal bacteria infection. It can be deadly within only a few hours. Some symptoms of Meningococcal disease are flu like symptoms (high fever, nausea, etc), stiff neck, purple rash, and a sore throat. They think that Meningococcal is spread similar to mono, through sharing drinks and kissing and so on. They also think that almost everybody has come in contact with it and contracted the bacteria, but it is dormant in there throats. It infects someone when the bacterium breaks through your tissue in your throat and spreads into the bloodstream. The bacterium then begins to affect the heart and it makes blood vessels bleed causing the purple rash of your now dead limps and causes loss of fingers, toes, arms, and legs. Specific Gravity - Definition of Specific Gravity The specific gravity of a substance is the ratio of its density to a specified reference substance. This ratio is a pure number, containing no units. If the specific gravity ratio for a given substance is less than 1, that means the material will float in the reference substance. When the specific gravity ratio for a given material is greater than 1, that means the material will sink in the reference substance. This is related to the concept of buoyancy. The iceberg floats in the ocean (as in the picture) because its specific gravity in reference to the water is less than 1. This rising vs. sinking phenomenon is the reason that the term specific gravity is applied, although gravity itself plays no significant role in this process. Even in a substantially different gravitational field, the density relationships would be unchanged. For this reason, it would be far better to apply the term relative density between two substances, but for historical reasons, the term specific gravity has stuck around. Specific Gravity for Fluids For fluids, the reference substance is usually the water, with a density ofà 1.00 x 103 kg/m3à at 4 degrees Celsius (waters densest temperature), used to determine whether or not the fluid will sink or float in water. In homework, this is usually assumed to be the reference substance when working with liquids. Specific Gravity for Gases For gases, the reference substance is usually normal air at room temperature, which has a density of approximately 1.20 kg/m3. In homework, if the reference substance is not specified for a specific gravity problem, it is usually safe to assume that you are using this as your reference substance. Equations for Specific Gravity The specific gravity (SG) is a ratio of the density of the substance of interest (à i) to the density of the reference substance (à r). Or, alternately, if we knew the specific gravity of ethanol to water, and knew the weight of one gallon of water, we could use this last formula to find the weight of one gallon of ethanol. (And, knowing that, we could use it to find the weight of another volume of ethanol by converting. These are the sorts of tricks that you may well find among homework problems that incorporate these concepts.) Applications of Specific Gravity Specific gravity is a concept that shows up in a variety of industrial applications, particularly as it relates to fluid dynamics. For example, if youve ever taken your car in for service and the mechanic showed you how small plastic balls floated in your transmission fluid, youve seen specific gravity in action. Depending on the specific application in question, those industries may use the concept with a different reference substance than water or air. The earlier assumptions applied only to homework. Fair Test There are many things that can be done to keep this experiment a fair one. Firstly the same test tube must be used as all of them have different weights. The amount of time you leave the test tube on the Bunsen burner is also crucial, as it would not be a fair test if you left one test tube in the heat longer than the others. You must measure the amount of mineral wool you put in the test tube so that you can deduct that and the weight of the test tube to get your result. Errors will be kept to a minimum with the use of digital weighing equipment. Preliminary work My preliminary work consists of an experiment titled Obtaining Copper Oxide from Malachite. Malachite is a mineral that contains copper. In the experiment we heated the Malachite in an attempt to obtain Copper Oxide. From the experiment I acknowledged that as the mass of Malachite increased so did the mass of Copper Oxide. The experiment was extremely similar to this experiment, thus I would expect the same to happen in this case. Therefore, in this experiment, the more Calamine that is used the more Zinc Oxide that will be produced. So theoretically, in perfect conditions, with a perfectly fair test in practise, the theoretical results would be achieved. My experiment however wasnt done in these conditions, which is why the results do not resemble each other perfectly. -10- Jack Mariner Chemistry Coursework Graph 3 is a line graph, which I feel shows the information more clearly. From it you can see that the theoretical amounts are similar to the actual amounts of Zinc Oxide produced, however there is room for a lot of improvement. For instance, reading 2. This was done using 1. 5g of Calamine. Something definitely went wrong here because it is so out of proportion to the other results. Due to the obvious mistake I took the liberty of requesting a glimpse of another groups results, to compare with mine and to see their result for 1. 5g of Calamine. Actual amount of ZnO Produced (g) Other Group Comparison of ZnO Produced (g) From Chart 3, you can see that my results are in fact relatively similar to the other groups results that I have compared with. The reasons for the differences are probably due to spillages or how concentrated the substances were, etc. Analysing the Results To analyse my results I shall look back at them individually. Chart 1 shows only my results. These were very pleasing because they were nearly as I predicted. At this stage I wasnt aware of any anomalous results as the relationship between them looked good. I am still satisfied with my results but would like to redo the test for 1. 5g of Zinc Carbonate. This would give better results to analyse and to draw a conclusion from. The second chart, Chart 2, showed the theoretical amounts. I included these into my experiment so that I could see how accurate my results were. Comparing with another group is good, but their results could also be wrong. Comparing with these theoretical results would show me immediately the accuracy of my results. I have drawn the graph on the next page to demonstrate this. -11- Jack Mariner Chemistry Coursework So the graph is really a way of measuring your accuracy. To do this I worked out the percentage (%) yield. This was done by using the equation; % yield = actual amount theoretical amount From the graph you can see that the majority of my results were very accurate. I have done readings 2 and 4 in a different colour because they are obviously wrong. They both have a percentage yield of over 100%, which is impossible. The reason for this is probably due to contamination and impure Calamine. These two readings are therefore anomalous results. Chart 3 shows that my results are actually fairly similar to those from the other group. Apart from the obvious experiment error in reading 2, the thing that catches my attention most is the fact that my results are all higher than those from the other group. This could be resulted from a number of things, for example the use of different pieces of equipment, or the stopwatch counted seconds at slightly different rates, consequently that group leaving the test tube under the heat for a longer period of time. Or on the other hand these results maybe higher then the compared groups results as a complete coincidence. -12- Jack Mariner Chemistry Coursework Conclusion From graph 3, you can see that my hypothesis is of high quality stating that I predicted a graph with strong positive correlation. This was almost a perfect prediction. My conclusion really for this experiment is that as the amount of Calamine increases so does the amount of Zinc Oxide produced from this. Theoretically this is done proportionately, but actually anomalous results interfere, leaving the results strongly related with strong correlation as apposed to a theoretical graph with perfect correlation. Evaluation I consider this experiment to be a success. The plan was followed very well and the results were of good quality. The measurements were done accurately, and a fair test was achieved. The procedure used was also a very fair and efficient one. Although the experiment was a success, I am still bothered by the fact that anomalous results occured in my experiment. I think that the reasons for these results were because of time limitations. We had very little time to accomplish this task successfully, so mistakes were inevitable. The improvements, which could be made in doing this experiment, are to have a longer time to do the experiment so that isnt done making careless mistake and if mistakes were made, there would be enough time to redo what was needed. Secondly more high tech equipment could be used to get more reliable and accurate results. Also, an essential thing is for the Calamine used to be pure. This is important because impure calamine could react at a different rate to more pure Calamine. This would have a huge bearing on the final result. Lastly, more readings could have been taken. This would lead to averages being taken giving better results.

When I came to Reinhardt College, I had to meet new people. I had to meet new teachers, coaches, and students. One coach who stood out to me is coach Jonathan Lenarz. He is the Reinhardt soccer coach and teaches Reinahardt Orientation and Wellness. There are many things that I can say about Jonathan Lenarz, like he is a careing, understanding, and intelligent person. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Caring is a great way to decribe a coach because he looks out for players on his team and also anyone who is around him. Coach Lenarz is the kind of person who tries to help students in anyway that he can. He is always giving a helping hand. In fact, Coach always tells the guys on the team that if they need someone to talk to they can always go talk to him. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Also, Coach is the kind of person that one can talk to about anything that is going on in one's life. He will not make juddgemants, even if it is something that is pretty bad. After talking to Coach, it seems like he always knows just what to say and when. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã The Coach is a very intelligent person. He always knows how to explain directions to everyone. Explaining directions is not always easy, because not everyone understands the first time. For example we have many foriegn players on our team this season and not all of them can speak nor understand English very well. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Another instructer that I have meet since I have been at Reinhardt College is my Western Civilization teacher, Sean Martin. Dr. Martin is very intelligent, but sometimes that can be a great thing and a bad thing. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Dr. Martin is one of the smartest teachers that I have ever had . A student could probably ask him any question about history, and he would know the answer. I believe that it very important for a teacher to know what he is talking about. Then there is another side to being too intelligent. One reason that it is not always a great thing is because a very intelligent teacher can go way to fast for some people.

National History Day Process Paper
The topic my partner and I have based the National History Day Project on is the Mayan Calender system compared to the Hopi Indian Tribe system. The reason I liked this topic is because it is currently 2012 and so the the world ending is a huge controversy in society. I am very interested in the subject and wished to do deeper research on the predictions by not only the Ancient Civilization of the Mayans. I have recently discovered the Maya people are not the only people with these beliefs and so I have grown more fascinated.The idea of basing our project on this topic was actually the first thing to cross my mind when we were informed of the project, so we decided it fit with everything this year. The research for this particular topic is very difficult because of the fact that the Mayans are such an ancient civilization so have very few primary sources. This is the main reason for including the more recent civilization of the Hopi Indian Tribe. I conducted my part of the research u sing the ABC Clio Database and other websites in which I was recommended.It is definitely not easy to conduct this research which requires a lot of patience, smart searching and reliability. We managed to find perfect information to allow us to shine the theme across the topic. The presentation category we have chosen to use is the exhibit. The reason I wanted to use this category is because my partner and I do not work best with technology and are able to better portray information in a more old-fashioned matter. I believe this is the most efficient way to get our research across. We have felt very confident with our project from the beginning.We are using a mid-sized poster board. Our creativeness works well with our topic and our research is sweet, short and to the point. Our project relates to the NHD theme of Revolution, Reform and Reaction because the ideas of the Hopi Indians coincides with those of the Mayans. This part relates to the Revolution portion of the theme. The top ic relates to the reform section because it has been edited and is used today. The reaction part is how the people have reacted to the end of this system and the predictions made according to their astrological beliefs.

Is the film version of ââ¬ËOf Mice and Menââ¬â¢ inferior to the original novel Essay
ââ¬ËOf Mice and Menââ¬â¢ was written in 1937 during the great depression, by John Steinbeck. Steinbeck was born in 1902 in California; some of his other novels are The Red Pony, Cup of Gold, To a God Unknown, In Dubious Battle, Canary Row, Sweet Thursday and various others. After months of ill health, John Steinbeck died of heart failure in December 1968 and is buried in Salinas, California. The film was directed by Gary Sinise, and runs for approximately 115 minutes and was made in the USA. Of Mice and Men is suitable for adaptation as the plot line is not too complicated and the scenes will be relatively easy to make, on the other hand there are several problems, a various amount of the scenes in the book cannot be adapted for the film, such as when Lennie hallucinates by the river. The opening sequence opens with George and Lennieââ¬â¢s escape from Weed, this is set in a big open field, with vibrant colours this will get the audiences attention as vibrant colours give the impression of danger. The camera starts of in a long shot, this is important as it shows the audience her ripped dress, then the camera zooms in to a close up to show the tears and fear on her face. The opening in the film is much more dramatic to the one of the novel, the director choose the include this section because it gives a contrast from George being in a combined place on the train, to having dramatic colours and wide open space, this makes the film more dramatic and exciting for the audience. In the novel Curleyââ¬â¢s wife and Curley are never seen together, they are always looking for each other, the incident with Crooks is not included. In the film Curleyââ¬â¢s wife does not have red mules, and is not heavily made up, she is wearing white and pink this gives her the look of femininity and innocence, which will give a different portrayal of the character to the novel. She is always seen in doorways, for example when she sees George, the camera uses a mid shot so the audience can see both their reactions, Curleys wife is looking outside like she is looking out for Curley, she is giving him no eye contact this shows us that she is not trying to lead him on. George is giving her eye contact, this might be making her feel nervous as she starts the fiddle with her dress. In the novel she is shown as being a dangerous, flirty character whereas in the film she is made to be totally different, the director has chosen to portray her sympathetically this is because this will enforce more of a reaction when she dies, this makes the audience feel sympathy for her. George and Lennie are presented with more sympathy in the film than the novel, the novel is less extreme. When Lennie has the fight with Curley the camera is in mid shot and Lennie is sitting down, this makes him look more vulnerable. The director uses a strong use of sound in the scenes of the fight, the punches are made to sound loud, this can make the audience relate to Lennie. A close up is then on Georges face to show his concern for Lennie, then a extreme close up of Lennie is used, this is very dramatic way of showing a characters emotions, the audience can see Lennieââ¬â¢s angry eyes and almost makes the audience feel scared as he has blood on his face when he is breaking Curleyââ¬â¢s hand, this makes the film superior the reading the novel as the camera shots and sound can make more of an effect on the audience and makes Lennie and George more three dimensional, whereas the novel makes them seem more one dimensional. The beginning of the novel is very different as Steinbeck sets the scene in clear detail, he creates a peaceful atmosphere by using nature ââ¬Ëthe leaves lie so deep and so crisp that a lizard makes a great skittering if he runs among themââ¬â¢. Unlike the novel the film shows an exciting and tense atmosphere. At the beginning of the film the director chooses to show George on a train, this scene is not included in the book because it would only work in a film, the director uses a haunting shilling melody lingering in the background, the camera shot focuses on a lonely figure crouched in the corner. By using this scene at the beginning it grabs the audienceââ¬â¢s attention and a spirited mood is set in the audience, he sets a stark contrast between that scene and the one that follows. This scene shows George sitting in the dark, which shows more about him than in the novel it shows that George is in the dark. The film relates to Steinbeck descriptive prose well, but some scenes could have been presented more like the book. In my opinion the film does do the film justice, but some characters could have been presented more like the characters in the book, for example Curleyââ¬â¢s wife, she is presented to be a flirty and dangerous character in the book and presented as a feminine vulnerable character in the film. The scenes are set in different ways but are successful in giving the audience the same amount of emotion as in the novel. The scenes that are in the novel that are not included in the film are not important and they are replaced with scene of the same importance that are easier to make. Overall the film is a good adaptation of the novel.

The following philosophical view complements the deductive approach because it is highly concerned with testing the hypothesis (Baines et al., 2011). Moreover, choosing chosen concepts from the ââ¬Å"research onionâ⬠can help to guide the researcher in choosing the pre-planned descriptive research design and the information obtained can be statistically inferred on a population. Therefore, the most comfortable research methodology to apply would be the quantitative technique (Crouch & Housden, 2012).
